What the August 29, 2026 Week 1 Update changes for progression, Fragile Tarstones, Shell respecs, save protection, performance, controls, bosses, and unresolved frame generation reports.
Update first, then check your build-sensitive guides
Checked on 2026-08-31. The official August 29 Week 1 Update is the first major retail update after launch. It adds progression tools and changes many systems that older routes, build plans, and troubleshooting notes may depend on. Install the current update, restart the game, and record the platform plus visible version text before retesting a problem. Do not copy pre-Week-1 item locations, resource plans, boss timing advice, or performance workarounds into the updated client without a fresh check.
Progression is less locked in
The official notes say Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite, so one playthrough can support more Shell and Tarstone upgrading than before. Mether's Severance is a Shell respec item that can be given to Zhirelle to reset a Shell and return spent Glimpses. Tarstones now return more Tarcores when broken, and saves with already leveled Tarstones should receive compensatory Tarcores in inventory. This is an official progression change, but the note does not publish exact restock timing, vendor quantities, or every location.
Fragile Tarstones and new dungeon safety item
The update adds Fragile Tarstones, which break after durability loss and produce a Tarcore when they break. Existing Justicar's Stone and Gloombound Stone copies are converted to fragile versions with stronger passive effects and break effects. Egon's Stone can revive the player at a dungeon entrance at the cost of durability, and when it breaks it prevents Gloom loss for that death. Treat this as an official tool for reducing a dungeon setback, not as permission to delete saves, force cloud conflicts, or test death loops without backups.
Exploration and rewards changed
New day-only Beacons were added in Fainweald and Mammon, some problematic chests were reset, dungeon reward placement in the first two regions was revised, and missing arena dungeon rewards were restored. The update also adds a teleporter after the Grisha pit fight in one dungeon. These facts are enough to retest old walkthroughs, but not enough to invent a complete map. If a chest, Beacon, cosmetic, or reward route differs from a pre-patch guide, record the current patch and source the route from direct retail observation before publishing exact steps.
Bosses, weapons and ripostes need retesting
Week 1 includes broad weapon, enemy, boss, hit-detection, tracking, riposte, and arena fixes. The official notes specifically say riposte damage now scales with enemy health for late game, NG+, and Night Mode, and that invulnerability timing and recovery were adjusted. They also document many named boss fixes. Current build advice should therefore prioritize retesting a known encounter over preserving old damage rankings. The patch notes name affected systems; they do not provide universal frame data, all hitbox dimensions, or a permanent best weapon list.
Save protection and softlocks
The update says an interrupted save could previously destroy a save file and that save writing has been changed so a crash or sudden shutdown should not leave players with nothing. It also lists fixes for Vatra's Temple lockout, Lazlo's Rekindle crash or softlock, a barkeep timing softlock, Hilga's Cauldron, an invisible and invulnerable Shell-unlock state, stuck locations, lift and chest failures, corrupted gates, and unreachable Gloom situations. Players who still have a lost save or lockout after updating should preserve evidence and report platform, version, save history, and reproduction steps instead of trying destructive recovery steps.
Performance, controls and frame generation
Official Week 1 notes describe performance optimizations, a fix for a hitch after the shader compilation screen, tar-gate frame drop fixes, flickering texture fixes, reduced background work, and updated crash diagnostics. They also add an Increased Geometry Budgets option that is off by default and uses less video memory when left off. Frame generation was reworked to apply after reload and NVIDIA frame generation should appear on more cards. A developer Steam post adds a narrow warning: update with no mods installed and engine.ini writable if frame generation is problematic.
Known issue still listed
The official Week 1 notes list a possible Malborn Offspring issue when using Grisha Remnant Summon during the boss fight. The official Reddit bug megathread also tells players to include bug type, location, version, reproducibility, platform, and PC specs, and lists several launch known issues that the team is aware of. Publish these as official known or investigated issues only within the stated scope. Single comments about missing skins, lost saves, freezes, or quest states are useful leads, but they should stay as community reports until confirmed by official notes or multiple independent reproductions.
